Fleckney C of E Primary School

Together we make learning an adventure

Geography at Fleckney

We have a rich curriculum that allows children not only to learn about capital cities of countries, read maps, identify physical and human aspects of different settlements but also a curriculum that allows children to better understand the world around them both locally and globally.
Children use key life skills such as;

  • Data collection, interpretation and presentation
  • Classifying
  • Reasoning and interpreting
  • Comparing and contrasting
  • Debating
  • Observing

These are skills that can be applied across the curriculum and prepare children well for life outside of school.
Two key foci of Geography at Fleckney School are;

  • Making effective use of information gathered during fieldwork.

In many topics (which can be viewed on the Geography learning journey) children are able to complete fieldwork. We have made it a priority to make better use of the fieldwork back in class as we believe analysis of fieldwork is the main vehicle for developing the key life skills mentioned above. To help support your children at home, you could point out some of the features of land as you travel. So if you visit a large city, take some photos of large blocks of flats or very tall buildings and compare and contrast these when you get back home.

  • Using Geography as a vehicle to support Global Learning, please see the information on Global Learning.

In an ever changing world, Geography is a fantastic vehicle to engage children in important topics such as Global warming and climate change, living more sustainably and the social and economic uses of land around the globe. Crucially, children learn that they will play a part in shaping the future of our planet.

Internet Resources:

To help you support children at home, we have gathered together some online resources for Geography. The BBC Bitesize pages are particularly good to discuss some of the topics children have enjoyed in school in more depth at home.
