How do we teach MFL at Fleckney School?
Aim
Our aims in MFL for our children are:
At Fleckney Primary School, MFL (Modern Foreign Language) teaching ensures that all children have the opportunity to:
- Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources;
- Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation;
- Write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt;
- Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
Planning and Delivery
Background
At Fleckney C of E Primary School, we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills, including the key skills of speaking and listening, and extends their knowledge of how language works. Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures, their own languages, and the culture and languages of others.
As part of the National Curriculum, all Key Stage 2 pupils must learn a modern foreign language. At Fleckney Primary, we have chosen to begin this language teaching in Year 2 (summer term).
Organisation
French is taught as the main foreign language from Year 2 to Year 6 (using Language Angels scheme of work). However, subsidiary languages are also taught in Key Stage 2. Subsidiary languages consist of a six-week block, exposing children to other languages other than French. In Years 3 and 4, the current subsidiary language is Japanese; in Year 5 and 6, the subsidiary language is Spanish.
